Sunderland '73: The People's Visual History Book

Sunderland '73: The People's Visual History Book

Description

A book by Visiting Professor of the Northern Centre of Photography, Julian Germain, in collaboration with Sunderland fans and local people.

Published by NEPN at the University of Sunderland, in partnership with A Love Supreme.

Sunderland’s extraordinary FA Cup run and their ‘giant killing’ triumph in the final - as a Second Division team against the then mighty Leeds United - was one of the biggest shocks in the history of the competition and a real-life football fairytale, reaching far beyond the usual football boundaries and affecting the whole community in an outpouring of civic pride and pure joy.

This book showcases a spectacular collection of original material associated with that 1973 Cup run that was either created or collected by the fans and local people who were there. It features snapshot photos, home-made banners, scarves, rosettes, scrapbooks, memorabilia and all kinds of mementos. Such items rarely get attention but they are ‘the people’s visual history’ and they offer a valuable and distinctive viewpoint that truly captures the emotions and experiences of the time.

Julian Germain is a photographic artist well known for his projects about football culture and for his appreciation of what he calls 'popular creativity’.

This project was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and at least 250 copies of the book will be gifted to schools, colleges, libraries and care homes.
