Important information for NCTJ students: 

  • You must sign up for your chosen exam by the signup deadlines listed above via the online store - onlinestore.sunderland.ac.uk.  No names can be added after the deadline date 
  • If you wish to cancel you must do so 3 weeks before the exam date (you must inform Rebecca Padgett otherwise you will still be required to pay for the exam)
  • Photographic Identification must be shown at each exam
  • If you are required to pay for this exam this MUST be made via the online store at the same time as sign up by credit card, debit card or Pay Pal - onlinestore.sunderland.ac.uk   
  • There can be no refunds without mitigating circumstances agreed by NCTJ Ltd.  NCTJ policies state a doctor’s note/letter or hospital letter will be accepted.  Students will also be required to pay an admin late fee if the deadline date is missed 
  • Students who require Special Exam Arrangements due to a disability, dyslexia or an ongoing medical condition must inform Rebecca Padgett, who can advise the NCTJ of changes to exam times and conditions

The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) delivers a premier training scheme for journalist students at the University of Sunderland.


The NCTJ diploma is available to students studying on any of our single honours Journalism programmes. All those programmes are accredited by the NCTJ.


Students who pass the seven NCTJ examinations obtain the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, vital for those wishing to pursue a career in the industry.
